Participation Intent Deadline
Please submit your intent to participate prior to December 13, 2019 to allow the Regional Planning Committee time to make necessary arrangements. All final entry forms are due no later than February 3, 2020.
Team participation comprised of no more than five members per team is open by invitaiton to AFS student chapters in a university and college level metal casting program. Castings are sought in all metals, casting processes, end-use applications and sizes/weights. Only one casting per studnet chapter should be submitted. The casting manufactuirng process should be completed within the university, by students. Other facilities within the university may be used, such as a machine shop for pattern construction, but the activity must be performed and supervised by AFS student chapter teama. Students are encouraged to begin draftiing ideas and establishing teams a s soon as possible.
Independent judges will evaluate each entry on the following:
Use of the casting process’s unique capabilities
Benefits delivered to the casting end user
Quality and workmanship
Poster and booth presentation at casting competition, AFS WI Regional, taking place February 13-15, 2020 in Milwaukee, WI at the Potawatomi Hotel. Students to be present with casting, for judge questions, February
2020. Each team will have two (2) minutes to present their submission. Schedule to be determined.
The top three teams will receive the following awards:
1st Place - $2,500
2nd Place - $1,000
3rd Place - $500
Imagination in Metal Casting Award - $1,600 (usually $800, doubled due to holdover from 2019)
Imagination in Metalcasting Award
The winner will have reduced to practice innovations in processing, materials (either alloy or other inputs into the casting process), post-processing or inspection techniques, or reducing the environmental impact of metalcasting. Judging criteria:
Success in reduction of the idea to practice
Potential impact to the industry within the lifetime of the students (50-75 years)
Castings will be displayed and judged at the AFS WI Regional. Your casting display should include a poster describing your design, pattern making, casting finishing and quality testing. Each team will have two minutes to present followed by three minutes of questioning by competition judges.
