• Let's get started!

We've no sales team, Mia & Andy will answer you directly!
  • What dates are you thinking about?

We design each trip around the season, the sun angle at locations, and water levels.
  • How many days are you thinking about visiting the Guilin area?

  • Cormorant Fishermen

Photographing the last Chinese fishermen surrounded by towering karst mountains, bamboo, and threads of mist on a beautiful remote bend of the Li River has a kind of magic that stays with you forever. We arrange sessions at sunrise and sunset, preparing everything, from cars, drivers, our photo guide, raft men, pay land access fees, model releases, and of course one of the last original cormorant fishermen to be ready and waiting at the perfect location for portraits, net casting, and blue hour photography with gas lamps.
  • Fishermen Session Cost Implications

The last of the cormorant fishermen of the Li will leave home sometimes at 3.30am to paddle upstream to meet us on remote bends of the river at 4-4:30 am, at least 30 mins to 1 hour before sunrise. We select locations based on the time of year, angle of light, water levels, reflection potential (caused by some shoals) and other factors such as river police regulations, that constantly are changing. We sometimes have to arrange motor rafts to also travel up to meet us, so we can access small rocky outcrops, small stone beach, a concrete bank, depending on water levels and if other photographers could be in the area. Having this motor raft gives us the most options and ensures you have the best chance to go home with a winning shot. To arrange raft men, motor rafts, the fishermen to do this rain or shine, and to shoot with us 1-2 hours is costly, especially if you elect to have 2 fishermen or choose the quieter more remote (and more beautiful in our view) sunrise locations. Other factors also can add to cost, such as the oldest fishermen in their 80's, we feel is unethical to have them paddle upstream against the flow this far, so we insist on arranging a motor raft to bring them and their rafts to some locations. Costs of fishing sessions, therefore, start at a minimum of $60 for 1 single fisherman at a location near to the village to $150. All fishermen costs go 100% directly to support the fishermen, who are now all retired and range from 62 to 87 years old and are from a pre-pension generation, and the income is vital to them.

  • Landscape Photography

Tell us about your interest and style of photography, so Andy and Mia can select the best photography locations when designing your tailored trip.
  • Rice Terraces & Tribal Villages

The rice terraces, known as the 'Longji Rice Terraces' or referred to by the gateway city 'Longsheng' offer reflections from Jan to Jun, and turn vivid green during summer, and golden at the end of September through to the middle of October, most years. Dazhai area is flooded later than Pingan, so that area is at its best from Jun to Oct, however the tribal minority people groups make for interesting portraits and wonderful insights into the local culture anytime of year, so we always recommend visiting Dazhai for at least a morning of portraits if time allows.
  • Photography Guide Selection

To arrange the right level of photo guide for your needs, it's helpful to know your photography experience and what photo guide level you seek...don't panic if you are new to photography, we guide everyone from the worlds top pros, Natgeo photographers, to people who prefer to take photos with their phones and want to enjoy a different type of trip.
  • Your Camera Equipment

When possible we pair a Nikon client to a photo guides that also shoots Nikon, or Canon to Canon etc... and we like to offer some suggestions to which equipment to bring, and which items you might like to leave at home. This works very well, for knowledge sharing, or if (heaven forbid) your equipment fails you can use the same camera system. Feel free to let us know about your kit and ask any questions...
  • Drone Team

Some of our team can fly and help people learn to pilot a drone. Our team use DJI Mavic Pro drones. Subject to availability they are happy to help you learn, or use the drone, controlling the camera and take shots from above. Would you be interested in this service? Do you have a drone?
  • Photography Vs. Relaxation

We want to gauge if this trip is more of a photography tour and vacation or a 'die-hard photography expedition' ;). Knowing this gives us an idea of how to balance the pace of the trip and what type of activity to include...
  • Hotel Style

We know that for most clients, us included, photography considerations come first, ahead of the choice of a particular hotel. There are many great options in Guilin and Yangshuo, but the hotel choice will affect which area we photography first, if we use a raft to access a location at sunrise or a car, and so has an effect on the trip order and design.
  • Car / Mini-Van

Which of our cars/mini-vans do you prefer for this trip?
  • Car Selection Cost Implications

Our driving team's not like normal Chinese tour company drivers. Our drivers have been hand-picked and trained by us for years, they have become friends, and in many cases are now accomplished photographers. Our cars and drivers are exclusively for our photo tour clients, we do not provide a driver only service. Our drivers serve our clients from as early as 3:30 am until 8-9 pm at night. They drive long distances, know all the mountain roads, access riverside tracks most drivers would not know or take. They have never been in accidents, late, or let us down in all our years in Guilin. This kind of reliable service (at ungodly hours) by drivers who are willing to be extremely flexible costs between $120 and $200 US dollars per day, depending on the car level selected and itinerary. This gives you an idea of the cost implication of car choice.

  • Fitness & Health

The words 'fit', 'active', 'hiker', means different things to different people and cultures. Knowing which of the following you are doing on an average week will really help us figure out which locations to suggest to make your trip right memorable, for the right reasons ;)
