The Generosity Ladder, Rev. Leslie Segars, Facilitator (Mondays, 6/5 - 6/26; 7-9 p.m.) In this season of Growing, Giving, and Going this course will help shift the way we see money, and help us to adopt a healthy concept of giving. The Generosity Ladder is a practical and insightful course that will help the participants uncover a true level of financial health and discover a step-by-step plan to save, spend, and invest money in a responsible way. Participants in this course will engage in a study discussing the shifting of perspectives, stepping towards excellence, being obedient, taking next steps and the participants will also have an opportunity to turn healthy financial dreams into healthy financial realities. The facilitator will be using Nelson Searcy’s The Generosity Ladder: Your Next Step To Financial Peace for this course.
Bipolar Faith, Min. Kim Arango, Facilitator (Thursdays, 6/8 – 6/29, 7-9 p.m.) In Rev. Dr. Monica Coleman’s book Bipolar Faith: A Black Woman’s Journey with Depression and Faith, she deeply and authentically examines the ways that the legacies of slavery, war, sharecropping, poverty, and alcoholism mask a family history of mental illness. Bipolar Faith is a prophetic witness that dares to unveil the trauma of rape, the crisis of living with a depressive condition, the hurt of isolation, the risks of faith, and the challenges of balancing life’s challenges. This course takes participants on a journey into the author’s life while participants explore their own journey in light of having faith. The facilitator will be using the text, Bipolar Faith: A Black Woman’s Journey with Depression and Faith, as the text for this course.

The Naked Now: Part II, Deacon LaVerne King, Facilitator (Mondays, 8/7 – 8/28, 7-9 p.m.) In his text, The Naked Now, Richard Rohr challenges people of faith to know that the kingdom of God exists in us and can be experienced through the “naked now,” a spiritual awakening that introduces you to your deeper self. This course and readings will move you from a mere human existence to putting sight to blind eyes through contemplative enlightenment. Participants can expect a shock and pierce to the spirit with the revelatory teachings of Jesus. This class will give you the desire to move from darkness to light, from shadows to illuminating reality, and from slavery to freedom. Perhaps you will even meet yourself for the first time. The facilitator will be using Rohr’s The Naked Now for this course.
Bible Basics, Min. Aretha Flucker and Theron Jones, Facilitators (Wednesdays, 8/9 – 8/30, 7–9 p.m.) This foundational Spiritual Formation course introduces participants to the creation of the Bible, its components, and authorship. The facilitators will explore the societal context in which the Bible was created and the political climate that birthed the Bible. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversation that engages questions about the Bible and more. This course is a prerequisite for most of the Spiritual Formation courses at FCBC.
Feminist, Womanist, and Women’s Theology, Pastor Willa Rose Johnson, Facilitator (Thursdays, 8/3 – 8/24, 7-9 p.m.) This course will explore the formative voices in theology written by and for women. Participants will focus on topics such as inclusive imagery for God (Elizabeth Schussler Fiorenza and Rosemary Radford Ruether) theology born from the experience of Black women (Kelly Brown Douglas, Alice Walker, and Jacquelyn Grant) and women’s biblical interpretation (Phyllis Tribble and Delores Williams). A significant time will be devoted to exploring how these concepts clash with our inherited theologies and how they interact with our lived experiences. The texts for this course will be provided.
