School-sponsored extracurricular activities for which testing is required include: band, baseball, basketball, cheerleading, choir, cross country, drill team, football, golf, journalism, soccer, softball, speech, debate, drama, swimming, tennis, track and field, UIL academic contests, volleyball, and wrestling. A student participating in these activities and/or requesting a parking permit shall randomly be tested for the presence of illegal drugs and alcohol throughout the school year. The purposes of the drug-testing program are to:
- Prevent injury, illness, and harm resulting from the use of illegal and performance-enhancing drugs or alcohol;
- Help enforce a safe and drug-free educational environment;
- Deter student use of illegal and performance-enhancing drugs or alcohol;
- Educate students regarding the harm caused by the use of illegal and performance-enhancing drugs or alcohol;
- Offer students a credible means to resist peer pressure as it relates to the use of illegal drugs, performance-enhancing drugs, and/or alcohol; and
- Provide a resource for support and assistance to any student who may be using illegal drugs, performance-enhancing drugs, and/or alcohol.
USE OF TESTING RESULTS
Drug test results shall be used only to determine eligibility for a parking permit and/or participation in extracurricular activities. Positive drug test results alone shall not be used to impose disciplinary sanctions or academic penalties. Additionally, unless required by court order or subpoena, drug test results shall not be released to law enforcement. Note, however, that nothing in this policy shall limit or affect the duties and responsibilities of the District as defined by state law, DISTRIBUTION OF POLICY ORIENTATION MEETINGS CONSENT USE OF RESULTS DeSoto ISD 057906 STUDENT RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES FNF INTERROGATIONS AND SEARCHES (LOCAL) DATE ISSUED: 8/1/2013 4 of 7 LDU 2013.03 FNF (LOCAL)-X Board policy, and the Student Code of Conduct.
