• The Kendall Center for Engaged Learning and the Folke Bernadotte Library are committed to supporting the ability of our faculty and researchers to participate more fully in the open access scholarly publication movement. Open access journals make articles freely available on the Internet, permitting any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search or link to the full text upon publication.

There are currently more than 9,000 open access academic journal titles. Some of these journals require that the authors pay a fee once their article is accepted for publication. This business model helps to support the continuous, free dissemination of an author’s research to an international audience of scientists, researchers, faculty, and other interested parties.

Who is eligible to receive funds: Tenured, tenure-track, visiting, adjunct, and special appointment Gustavus Adolphus College faculty. Authors with grant support or external funding to cover publishing fees are ineligible. Due to limited funds, any author is limited to one fund reimbursement per fiscal year.

What publication venues are eligible? The article or book must be published with an open access publisher that does not charge readers or institutions for access to the publication.  To be eligible, journal publishers must be listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals and book publishers may be listed in the Directory of Open Access Books. Also, a publisher must be a member of Open Access Scholarly Publisher's Association or meet its Code of Conduct.

Journals or books with a hybrid model (some content by fee and some content open access) or delayed open access are not eligible for this fund.  Articles and books must be fully available open access at the time of publication.  Currently, the major open access publishers BioMed Central, Public Library of Science (PLoS) and Hindawi meet these requirements, as do many other smaller open access publishers.

What fees can the fund reimburse? Open access publishing funds are awarded on a first come, first serve basis to a maximum reimbursement of $300.00 per article or book.

Funds may be used for open access publishing and processing fees, including open access page charges.  Funds may not be used for reprints, color illustration fees, non-OA page charges, permissions fees, web hosting for self-archiving, or other expenses not directly related to open access fees.

    Administration of the fund

In consultation with the Chair of the Folke Bernadotte Library, the Kendall Center for Engaged Learning administers the fund. The fund began as a pilot in Fall 2014 and will be evaluated at the end of each fiscal year.  The fund may be suspended if sufficient funding is not available.

Publications will also be included in the Gustavus Institutional Repository.
