This course builds upon a basic understanding of the American Society of Addiction Medicine’s (ASAM) guiding principles, six-dimension biopsychosocial assessment, and patient placement standards. Participants will refresh knowledge and refine skills related to basic competencies in substance use treatment with a special focus on how withdrawal acuity, biomedical conditions, and cognitive/behavioral/emotional conditions interact with other ASAM dimension severity. The course uses Motivational Interviewing and The Transtheoretical Model to develop insights and clinical language related to assessing and developing an individual’s readiness to change and engage in services. The course also develops concepts related to identifying how social systems and cultural identities impact a person’s vulnerabilities to relapse and continued use. Participants will use case studies to practice implementing skills while preserving integrity of assessment and treatment planning during the utilization review process. Completion of a Basic ASAM training is required to take this course. If you have not completed the Basic ASAM through Daystar, we will need proof of completion emailed or faxed to us.
