As part of our mission to connect creatives through diverse and experiential endeavors, Light Grey Art Lab is proud to coordinate our third year of the LGAL Iceland Residency Program. This year's creative residency will take place on July 29, 2016 through August 3, 2016 (with potential second dates in July 22 - July 27th, 2016) in Southern Iceland. We have rented a wonderful cabin as the home-base of our exploratory journey, where we will share concepts, conversations and experiences with a group of creatives from around the world.
THE CONCEPT AND LOCATION:
Light Grey Art Lab founders Lindsay Nohl and Chris Hajny have traveled to Iceland many times in the last several years to explore their own creative practice and to be influenced by the landscape. Each journey has inspired new perspectives, not only in creating, but to help understand the nature of the land, Iceland's shrinking glacial formations, a warm and hardy culture, and an ancient history that is present in the whole of Iceland.
Our art and our lives have been transformed by what we've learned from our travels to Iceland. We also wish to reference the hard work and studies of individuals like James Balog, the National Geographic photographer-turned-scientist, whose interdisciplinary approach to documenting and understanding the landscape has inspired him to be an advocate of the space as well as to teach others how they could see the world differently.
The environment in Iceland is entrancing on a grand and primal level, and we wish to bring leaders in the arts world together here to learn and share thoughts on creativity, problem solving and ideation. We hope to learn more about why we need to use our power as creators in art, illustration and design to change minds and make an impact upon our return.
We are accepting applications for our 2016 Residency program and are looking forward to meeting all applicants over the next few months as we prepare for next year's adventure.
TO APPLY: Please submit your details below by August 30th, 2015. We will be reviewing applications as they are submitted and will respond within several weeks of receiving your application. We are looking forward to hearing from you!
SPECIFICS:
We are looking for individuals that are interested in helping contribute to an atmosphere of creative cameraderie and people that are willing to be open to adventure, creating on-location and collaborating with others in real time. As part of our mission for collaborative learning, each artist in residence will be asked to contribute a 40 minute interactive workshop or demonstration, discussion topic, or presentation that introduces a piece of their personal practice, methodology or theories to the group. We are also looking for individuals interested in or willing to contribute to podcast or video content created during the residency.
THE SELECTION PROCESS:
We will be selecting the final group of artists by September 30th, 2015, and artists will be asked to confirm payment of their spot within two weeks of acceptance. A formal email will be sent out to all applicants with the status of their application at this time. Please be thorough when submitting the details of your application as the team uses it to better understand what an applicant can bring to the group experience. Skype interviews may be scheduled with artists who may want to discuss more details than the form allows, however, it is not a necessary part of the application process. We do ask that each applicant pays special attention to the "40 minute workshop / sharing session" and provide their best concepts for what they may share with the group. In the past we have had people discuss design theory as it relates to their work, a typography workshop on slab serif fonts, meditation and wellness, productivity and the creative schedule, a textural material studio workshop and many other diverse talks. The most important thing would be to suggest a topic that resonates intimately with one's personal practice.
OTHER REMINDERS:
***Please note that the residency will contain a lot of hiking, walking and moving about in all types of weather. The core of our residency will be happening outdoors, so please take that into consideration when applying for a spot!
Thanks again and please send us an email if you have any questions about the residency or accompanying programming.
Sincerely,
Lindsay Nohl, Founder Light Grey Art Lab
