  • The Clara Carter Higgins Summer Environmental Studies Scholarship

    Open to undergraduate students at the time of application who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents enrolled in a U.S.–based institution.

    Provides $3,000 to one or more students who have demonstrated a keen interest in the betterment of the environment an opportunity for further study at a site chosen by the student. Some of the summer programs students have completed recently include the study of hazardous waste, marine science, energy, plant resources in the tropics, barrier island ecology, and oil spill cleanup and control.

  • SHORT ESSAY: Please tell us about the summer program or project you have developed and/or selected, how it fits into your future plans, and what knowledge or experience you hope to gain out of it. Essay must be 300–500 words, submitted in 12-point font with one-inch margins on all sides.

  • BUDGET: Please provide a budget detailing how you plan to use the scholarship funds. Be sure to include travel relating to the study proposed. Be sure to save your document as a PDF before uploading.

  • REFERENCES: Two letters of recommendation are required to be eligible for a GCA scholarship.

    Reference #1: One from your advisor on your academic progress and achievements, personal qualities, and qualifications for the summer program or project you have developed or selected.

    Reference #2: The second letter should be from a professor familiar with your work and interests including information on the program or project you have developed/selected. 

    * If you have applied to a program but are not yet enrolled, please provide information on the program, as well as, confirmation of your acceptance. All applicants must comply with the educational and eligibility requirements of the Higgins Scholarship to guarantee its provisions. 

    Electronic copies of the letters of recommendation should be attached below and must be signed by the individual writing the letter, or sent to scholarshipapplications@gcamerica.org directly from their email. If your reference plans to submit your recommendation via email, please upload a placeholder below. Include their email if possible.
