  • What is the problem?

    Over the last 100 years, the world's fish stocks have seen shocking decline. The majority of stocks are now considered fully-exploited, overfished or depleted, and we are in danger of losing some species altogether.

    This picture shows the population of fish in the North Atlantic Ocean in 1900 and then 2000. (The darker the colour, the greater the number of fish)

  • The good news is that fish stocks can recover if they are managed well.

    The Marine Stewardship Council was set up in 1999, as a non-profit organisation, to:

     - Reward fishermen and women that are fishing responsibly

     - Encourage sustainable fishing

     - Allow customers to be able to choose sustainable fish

    The MSC's blue ecolabel can only be used next to fish which has met strict environmental criteria. It is a guarantee that the fish is sustainably caught and traceable.

    The MSC ecolabel is only awarded to wild-caught fish.

  • Your business is applying for, or already has MSC 'Chain of Custody' certification.

    This means that you are able to use the MSC's distictive logo on your menu next to fish that is from an MSC certified fishery. To be able to do this, your business must have certain procedures in place to make sure that MSC fish is not mixed up in your kitchen, and is definiately MSC when served.

    There are a few simple things that you need to be aware of and do...
