HISTORY:
Sarah Elizabeth Knight was born June 13, 1986 in Iowa City. She graduated from Linn-Marr High School in 2004 and from WIU in 2009 with a degree in bilingual/bicultural education. At the time of her death in September of 2011, she was teaching a bilingual kindergarten class at Hillcrest Elementary School in East Moline, IL. Sarah was a bright, spirited, and delightful young woman whose passion was teaching. She was committed to maintaining her students' culture and helping them transition to English. Sarah's family established the scholarship in her memory to assist other students studying to become bilingual/bicultural teachers, and to honor the dedication and love Sarah brought to her classroom.
CRITERIA:
To apply for and receive the scholarship, students must:
1. Be a full-time, undergraduate bilingual/bicultural education major
2. Overall grade point average of 3.0
3. Demonstrate financial need
TERMS:
Amount of award varies annually and will be applied to the recipient's account.
For 2020, the award will be $5,500.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
:
Scholarship may be used for study abroad.
SELECTION PROCESS:
Faculty of the bilingual/bicultural education program will select recipients.
